Roller Derby Broke My Heart

Posted under Roller Derby, Skating - Feb 16th, 13 - Comments Off on Roller Derby Broke My Heart

The common mythos of roller derby is the story that “roller derby saved my soul.” There is another side, though. When I started derby almost a year ago, my soul was already fine. I already enjoyed challenging myself, pushing myself, achieving physical goals, and had even played team sports (baseball, badly, in elementary school.) Basically, […]

I haven’t felt much like posting, but I have been working out, somewhat. Last week I hurt my neck. I’m also still struggling with derby. The frustrating thing about being in a messed up situation is that if you talk about it, you’re a gossip. If you don’t talk about it, the pressure builds up […]

Good skating workout

Last night’s open skate was good. Two of my teammates were there so we worked on speed and sprinting starts. We did 25 laps (I did mine in 5:13) and I also did two sets of 5 laps in 1:00. My technique is improving! I think the running, pull-ups, and kettlebells are helping. I start […]

Insomnia and Training Plans

I have got to do something about insomnia. I hate that even if I’m tired, it’s hard for me to get to sleep. Right after I said I wanted to start training for running again, a friend put out a call for people to join her in a Tough Mudder race (10 miles, with obstacles.) […]

Trying to conquer 25 in 5

Tuesday’s workout was a bike sprint workout on my spin bike. I did 10 :30 second sprints with a minute and a half between. I think I can go a bit harder tonight (Friday.) Wednesday was another good derby practice. Our dry-land practice was canceled at the last minute, so I did a Zuzka-style workout, […]

Rink Rant

I ended up taking Sunday as a rest day and watched derby on Canuck Derby TV. I wanted to give my knees a break. I’m having a psychological issue with skating. I’m an introvert who can fake it for a while, but skating is very social, especially when you live in a neighborhood that’s pretty […]

After Practice

Let’s see… Tuesday night, I finally did the Zuzanna ZWOW #25 in 21:09. I did all of the reps! No major modifications. Yesterday was dry land training. My right knee was acting up, so I modified a bit. I did figure out that although it hurts to walk, I could run and sprint on it […]

Yesterday, I decided to frighten myself by looking up the WFTDA Minimum Skills requirements. For advanced, 50 push-ups are required! I’m terrible at push-ups! I can do them fine on my knees, but they’re nearly impossible for me on my feet. In addition to my pull-up work, I’m going to add in training for push-ups. […]
