Last night, I did part of Cathe’s Butts & Guts workout. It’s a good one! I couldn’t do the whole torture session because I only had the amount of time my son was in a class, but I did most of the Timesaver, and it was good! Today is an easy run/ elliptical on campus. 30-40 minutes.

I love my Cathe tapes, but I can see that some of them are better saved for refinement. B&G is a logical progression from Leaner Legs or Pyramid Lower Body. I still need to work on the more general muscle workouts before getting so specific. But I think I would like to fit this one in once every two weeks or so.

Still loving Spark People, even though it’s down for maintenance right now. They did warn us.

Running is going great. I think I can consistently fit in a 40-50 minute run three days a week, then a Saturday run is optional. I’ve really been itching to get out there and run, even on non-running days, but I don’t want to hurt myself, so I’m not really running two days in a row yet. I’m so glad to be enjoying running again, and I’m glad to live in an area with decent enough sidewalks.
Did the upper body work from the new Cathe Body Max DVD yesterday. Can’t wait to try the rest, but with school and running, don’t know when I can fit that in. Over Thanksgiving break, I might do two-a-days, and combine a shorter run with a Cathe DVD each day.
I’m hoping to lose 9 kilos by Christmas. At least I know if I don’t focus on weight loss, I can maintain and not gain. In the past two months, I have not focused, but I have maintained, so that is great to know. Now, if I just focus, I can get to 75 by Christmas. If I do, I’ll take January off as a plateau month, to practice maintaining the weight.

My whole attitude toward food has changed. It’s just food. That’s the most amazing part. I’m eating just one serving of most foods (except fruits and veggies) and I’m satisfied with that. That really makes me happy. It’s like I’m getting my head on straight. But the real health breakthrough will be when my family is fit, healthy, and active too.

I’m back from the pool. Spent about 45 minutes treading water– I can’t find my goggles. I’ve ordered prescription goggles, though. They’ll be here in about a week or so. I was kind of disappointed. I would have worn my flowered swim cap if I knew I wasn’t going to be doing laps. After we got home, I did the exercises in this article to work on my IT Band. I hope to get that strengthened and get strong enough to be able to start running in a couple of months. Until then, I realized I can get to the pool for at least half an hour six days a week, so I’m going to try to do that. Starting with about 10 laps a day, working up to about 45 minutes of swimming. When my IT Band is better, I’ll start doing some time on the elliptical.

Weigh-in is tomorrow. I suspect I won’t have a loss.

In the category of bad idea: go to the Y and do 50 minutes of cardio. Then find out it’s your school’s ice skating night at the rink and skate for an hour and a half. Then go to your already scheduled bellydance class. I am exhausted! I was so tired last night that I didn’t even stay for choreography. I’ll start staying next week, when we start choreography for the drum solo for the recital.

Today is supposed to be strength training, but I’m not sure if I have it in me. I’m trying to sign up for a wellness class today, so depending on how that goes, I might be able to fit in a short circuit workout at the rec center on campus. I also plan to take a walk at dinner time. I’m bringing dinner, but I might go to the veggie restaurant and get a smoothie.

I can’t wait until I can fit into my swimsuit. I think I have about 15 pounds to lose to get into the largest one I have. Another ten will get me into the next one. I want to get back to swimming laps at least once a week.

And, yesterday’s eDiets shopping trip was quite an eye-opener. It cost $103 dollars and the only thing I bought that wasn’t on the list was honey-roasted peanuts for my son. Some of that was staples like sesame oil or worcestershire sauce. Another item was vegetable broth, which I need to plan to make on my own in the future. I do hope that future menus will use some of the items left over from this week. Otherwise, the plan will not be doable as a plan. However, DH liked last night’s dinner, so maybe the cost of making multiple dinners will convince him to eat healthy along with me. Like I told him, this is not about dieting. This is about teaching me how to cook healthy, tasty meals, and teaching me how to put together a daily menu. These are things that were not done when I was a kid, for various reasons that no one needs to feel bad about.

Speaking of healthy foods, I’m getting frustrated with my son. He wants to lose about 5-10 pounds (he’s stocky, but not fat), but he refuses to eat healthy along with us. He wouldn’t even try the bean tostada last night. Yesterday, his only meal was from McD. (He’s almost 17- there’s little I can do to make him make the right nutritional choices. But, he knows there are healthy, low-fat, whole wheat options here at home, so it’s up to him.)

My treadmill is more broken than I thought. It probably needs an entire back cap, but we’re going to try a temporary fix. However, I cannot use it today. So, I am going to go to the Y and use the machines there. I’ll probably go on the elliptical until it gets to be too much, then I’ll switch to a treadmill. I’m going to train by heart rate and time, going for a total of 45 minutes (including warm up and cool down) and keeping my heart rate at about 145 bpm. I’m also going to run through one weight circuit on the machines. I hope to be out of there by 11am, when the rush begins. I’ll edit this post with updates.

I’m back from the Y. My vegetarian wrap from last week is heating in the oven. I had a pretty good workout. I did 5 minutes on the treadmill to warm up, 21 minutes on the elliptical, and 29 minutes on the treadmill. I ran out of time, so I didn’t do a circuit. Instead, I came home and did 10 squats and 6 one-legged lunges using the ball. After posting this entry, I will do supermans and crunches on the ball.

Elliptical: Distance 1.11 mi/ time 21 min

Treadmill: Distance: 1.6 mi/ time 28 min

Average HR 142/ cal burned 263/ 39% fat

The more tag hides boring details about the poundage I used.
Back: the EZ curl bar with 12 lbs of plates. Too easy. 8 lb dumbbells. Too easy. Could have done 20lbs of plates and 10 lb dumbbells for back.

Biceps: EZ curl with 12 lbs of plates. Not a bad weight to stick with for a couple of weeks. I definitely feel a “stretch” that tells me even 4 more pounds might be difficult. 8lb dumbbells. Could have used 10lb dumbbells.

Before grad school, I could do 40lbs of plates for back, 30 for biceps, 15lb dumbbells for back and 12 for biceps. Maybe muscle memory will kick in if I do each workout in the series once per week. I would love to be back at that level by the end of February. If I am, I want to do a two-month gym style rotation for weights. I will decide later what my cardio rotation will be. Once I fit back into my swim suit, laps will figure in at least twice a week.

May-June, I want to focus on the “tank top” type rotation (heavy on the biceps, triceps, and shoulders) and fat-burning.

I have to go now, though. I need to pick up lunch and some vitamins.
